For those unfortunate households that can't get wired broadband, and if Telstra has anything to do with it, have no hope of ever getting wired broadband (unless they supply it), help me 3G, you're my only hope. USB and PCMCIA varieties of 3G modem.
If you also wanted to run a network to share that internet connection, 3G routing products are starting to hit the market whereby you either plug in a USB or PCMCIA modem or in one case the cellular modem is built in and you just have to plug in your SIM card.
Netgear has one where the modem is built in here. We went with a Netcomm 3G router for our client and just has to plug in their USB 3g modem.
It should have been a simple affair to get it all setup but due to modem compatibilities with the first USB 3G modem we tried from BigPond we had to switch over to a Telstra NextG in order to be able to connect with a the next 3G modem we tried.
Note that the MF636BP UDB modem is in compatible with the Netcomm N3G002W 3G router. Painful and time consuming lesson #1.
